Privilege, Power, and Difference
by Alan Johnson
After reading this text, I came to realize how privilege can affect anyone. People can be cruel and use their skin as a form of "you can't do anything bad to me." There has always been privilege, and there always will be, unfortunately. Anyone can be affected by privilege, sexism, racism, etc. When reading this text, it really opened my eyes to how evil people can really be, when it comes to going to a coffee shop and "demanding a refund" or not being scared when a cop pulls you over. It infuriates me when people think that nobody can "touch" them when they do something bad just because of their skin tone. Something needs to stop and/or change.

Hey Jill, I never realized how privileged that some of us really are. Just like one of the quotes you incorporated, I've never had to worry about being pulled over or walking into a coffee shop. After reading this I feel bad for what this society has put some of these people through and it's not fair.
ReplyDeleteI hear your frustration... and feel it too. I wonder about your first point. "Privilege can affect anyone." Anyone? How does this connect to SCWAAMP that we talked about in class? Do some people experience privilege more than others? Will be interested to see how you connect this to Delpit, too!
